When it comes to Thai tennis, the name of Paradorn Schirapan, first Asian player to break into the top 10, often springs to mind.

However, in the shadow of one of the greatest players in the history of Asian tennis stood a certain Danai Udomchoke, more discreet than his compatriot, but whose talent shone through at the 2007 Australian Open.

For those who were unaware of his existence before opening this article, Danai udomchoke was one of those unknown players who spent most of their career on the challenger and future circuits. Far from the Rod Lavers, Phillipe Chatrier and other prestigious tennis arenas, Danai made his way in silence for many years, until that special beginning of 2007.

Surprising winner of his first two rounds, the young Thailand native put in his finest performance in the first Grand Slam of the season, eliminating No.24 seed and former world No.1 Juan Carlos Ferrero on his way to his first Grand Slam 3rd round, where a certain Djokovic, rising star of world tennis, was waiting for him.

This was probably not the most eagerly-awaited match of the day, but certainly a pleasure for the Australian spectators, who were delighted to discover the audacity and creativity of a young Thai player with a charming smile.

Playing with no complexes, the surprising Danai Udomochoke produced his most impressive display in front of an impressed crowd.

The 101st player in the world even went so far as to steal a set from one of the serious contenders for the title, in a match that allowed him to leave his mark on the history of the Australian tournament.
