It took more than 13 years to finally see a Thai player in the men’s main draw at the Australian Open. Once represented by Paradorn Srichaphan and Danai Udomchoke, Thailand is finally smiling again and might even have found its new idol.

At 23 years old, Kasidit Samrej is at a turning point in his career. The current world number 418 has seized a golden opportunity: to qualify for the main draw of the Australian Open without playing through the qualifiers.

Rarely in the spotlight and often unknown to the general public, the Asia-Pacific playoffs for the Australian Open provide a golden chance for lower-ranked players to directly access the first round of the Australian Open by earning a wildcard at the end of the tournament.

He was not the supposed winner of these playoffs, yet Samrej has shown many qualities that could trouble his future opponent, former world number one Daniil Medvedev.

Powerful from the baseline and with a strong serve, the Bangkok native will have the chance to shine in just a few hours, and perhaps even pull off the biggest upset of the tournament’s early stages.
